History - Books, Articles, News Clippings
Lowertown is one of the oldest communities in Ottawa. Its history is not well known but it was the home of Ottawa's first strong French community. It was also the site of a destructive urban renewal scheme in the 1960's, which saw the removal of hundreds of families, expropriation of people's homes, demolition of many heritage buildings, and dismantling of communities that had been established for over a century in parts of Lowertown. The following book references and news clippings provide some background on Lowertown's history.
