Saving Lowertown's Disappearing Heritage

In 2011, the past finally caught up with Lowertown East's remaining heritage buildings. A proposal by a local developer included a request to demolish 4 heritage buildings on Bruyère and St. Andrew Streets. One house, 316 Bruyère was over 140 years old. A six-unit brick rowhouse was also threatened. Sadly, due to the City's lack of heritage protection in this section of Lowertown, there was little that could be done to save any of the buildings. The community fought a hard battle and lost; however, City Council made a commitment to inventory the remaining buildings in the area and provide heritage protection to avoid future threats.

The following are documents and news clippings from this important piece of Lowertown's history in protecting its heritage.
