Four-Lane Study Protest
Ten years ago, the Task Force first proposed King Edward be reduced from 6 to 4 lanes. A four-year study looking at this option was released in March of 2011 and indicated that it was possible. Unfortunately, city staff, previously opposed to this idea, once again pushed hard to eliminate it as an option. Even more serious, the local Councillor, Mathieu Fleury, did not support the Task Force when he was most needed. Instead of pushing for the four-lane option and finding a compromise, he sided with city staff. The resulting eruption of community dissatisfaction culminated in a 100-person protest that took place on April 26, 2011. This was one day before the final vote which sealed the fate of this opportunity to improve the avenue.
